Gabe is a great addition to the series and it keeps the action, suspense, and romance going. I love that this series takes place almost a year after the invasion; this means that the characters have already settled into accepting a new way of life and are now ardently fighting back. This was a fast paced read and Gabe and Emerson have a fiery chemistry that kept me quickly turning the pages.Emerson is one tough heroine and her dedication to helping others has been her whole life. She puts her heart and soul into caring for others and she desperately wants to help Gabe find peace and closure. Even after being kidnapped and beaten up by aliens in the last book, Emerson refuses to let it get in the way of doing her job and she continues to go out with Hell Squad and help with survivors. Emerson's feelings for Gabe have always been there but when he starts visiting her in the dark of night she finds an unexpected connection, if only Gabe would open up about losing his brother.
Gabe is the strong, silent type and he's not used to expressing his emotions. He's still dealing with guilt and grief over his twin brother's death and though Emerson provides the only peace he knows he doesn't know how to tell her that. While he struggles with words, he finds a way to show his feelings by leaving little gifts for Emerson and I loved this tender side to his character. I would have liked more about Gabe's history in the experimental military program which is hinted at but not fully developed. Gabe himself doesn't completely know all of what was done to him so I understand the lack of backstory but I was really hoping for more because I think it's a fascinating idea.
I also liked the brief look at a new squad, the Berserkers -- I think their name speaks for itself and I'm certainly intrigued and hope we'll get some books about them.

May contain Spoilers!
This is the 3rd installment in the series. I enjoyed this book but not as much as the second book. I felt there were more issues with this story line then the other two books. I would give it a 3/3.5
The reason for the 3/3.5 was I really didn't like the Emerson or some of the things Gabe was doing.
Gabe was trying to work through his grief of losing his twin brother but breaking into Emerson's room for adult relations just doesn't sit well with me. It was completely consensual but it was the fact that it was more of a wham bam thank you mam. He wouldn't really acknowledge there relationship outside the bedroom. He also kept putting his entire team and risk. Not so much a criticism on Gabe's part but more so with the Marcus. Why wouldn't they have put him on desk duty or something when he continued to disobey orders.
Emerson just irritated me. She was a workaholic which was fine with what they were going through. My issue was in the second book she was held for an hour with the enemy where she was beaten. In this book she continues to have flashbacks to what happened but it is never explained what she went through. She also puts up with a lot of Gabe's hot and cold behavior without even blinking. It is what it is. When she finally stands up for her self after he dumped her, he says oh wait I'm not done with you and she caves and takes him back. She even caves with her patients. There was one person who was rescued in the last book who refused to be examined and she was ok if you don't want to make sure you're OK it's fine. I don't know many people who could just opt out of a follow-up visit to make sure they are ok.
One of the big plot twists in this book I figured out in the last book so it wasn't a great surprise when it came up in this book. This didn't make me give up the series but it was close.
Marcus 3.5
Cruz 4
Gabe 3.5

This story picked up two weeks after the events of book two. Of all the characters who have appeared in this series so far, Gabe was the most mysterious—the quiet one, unexplainable abilities, intimidating and with an obvious soft spot for Doc Emerson. Since the death of his twin Zeke in the first book, he’d been taking more and more risks to the point of being a risk to his team.
My heart went out to Gabe ever since he'd lost Zeke and ended up spiraling. His pain and anger were understandable and relatable, but the saddest thing was confirmed in his secret trysts with Emerson, something that had been going on for two months. Even though it was always consensual between them, it was far removed from anything romantic. He used her to forget, and she allowed it, hoping that he'd come around. That's not to say she was a doormat for unrequited love.
All that aside, Gabe really was a great character especially when he showed the caring softer side of himself. Despite his attraction to her, he felt that he would just mess up her life if he let her let him in. He considered himself anti-social and a killer, something the United Coalition had made him when they'd undertaken experimental enhancements. The first time he left bruises on her after rough lovemaking horrified him. He obviously had less faith in himself than Emerson did.
Emerson was a tough cookie. Smart, feminine, driven, passionate and compassionate, but still lonely. Though still traumatized by her time in captivity by the raptors, she was determined to overcome the nightmares and fears, putting others ahead of herself. She realized she'd been selfish by not pushing him to open up to her and relishing in their late night encounters. The push ultimately leads to him walking away, but it provided both of them the necessary space to come to terms with their issues. When one of their missions went wrong, Gabe made a bad judgement call that nearly killed his team. The little progress he'd made was thrown away, Emerson included. But don't worry, she didn't let him get away that easily. The sex scenes were very hot!
The suspense and overall alien plot continued on its upward incline of horrors. A vicious attack on Emerson inside the walls of Blue Mountain Base by a rescued survivor sparked the horrible realization of what the aliens were up to with their human captives. And like all the other heroines before her, Emerson had to accompany Hell Squad on their dangerous mission, which helped her face down some fears. Roth, leader of Squad Nine made an interesting connection with one of the rescued humans. She was a tough fighter and something she said implied she knew about the impending invasion. I can't wait to read that story! But first, there was a chapter from Reed's POV setting up his story next. Another excellent story in this series.
There weren't as many errors as in preceding books, only one stand out that I noticed “Goddammit it, no.”
When Gabe saw her dressed to kill (him), he noticed “she was wearing her lab coat”. Then he noted further “her top—and there wasn’t much of it—was red and strapless.” How could he see it was strapless? Unless her coat was hanging off her shoulders which would look silly rather than sexy.
Anytime Reed was mentioned it got repetitive with his past as a SEAL and his love for the outdoors.
"A voice that sounded like gravel." Aside from the wording, it seems every male has a "gravelly" voice in this series.
