Zombie Incorporated The Katie Allred Zombie Series Book 1 eBook Jill Elaine Hughes
I normally prefer other supernatural genres (vampires, werewolf, ext), and stay away from the zombies due to the blood and gores as well as the lack of humanity. However this book has not only a new take on the zombie apocalypse, but on the whole zombie species. They are still brain eating dead creatures, but ones with a unique zombity ( zombie humanity). A great read for young adults or anyone wanting an urban fantasy/supernatural read without the sex and violenceTags : Zombie, Incorporated (The Katie Allred Zombie Series Book 1) - Kindle edition by Jill Elaine Hughes. Zombie Incorporated The Katie Allred Zombie Series Book 1 eBook Jill Elaine Hughes Reviews
Robbie's Review
If author Jill Elaine Hughes did not intend Zombie, Incorporated to be a parody of paranormal romance novels, she certainly missed a golden opportunity....
We meet our heroine Katie Allred as she is about to graduate from high school and be unceremoniously booted from the nest. She needs a job and since she has the inside track at a local factory, Zimble Box Corporation, she finds herself hired on the spot for a job about which she has no clue, working for a boss who is beyond strange. Katie immediately suspects that all is not as it appears to be at the box factory. People look funny, smell funny and act funny. Her boss, Mr. Zimble, is a little person (midget) and takes a special liking to her. He gives Katie a netsuke, a small medieval Japanese sculpture, to guide her along her way. Katie names her companion "Fred" even though he continuously reminds her that his name is Harutso. Fred is the mind guide you never wanted. His purpose is to ease Katie's way through the Contagion which is a takeover by the Zombie nation, but his advice is so ambiguous that she can't decipher which way to turn. The intra-caput (yes....I made up that word) dialogue between Katie and Fred is laugh-out-loud funny at times but in the final analysis...Fred knows what Fred knows!
Katie survives the Contagion which she thinks is the Zombie Apocalypse and returns to her job at the box factory although things have gotten even stranger there. On a day when Fred has warned Katie that all will be revealed, "a man so impossibly handsome, so perfect, that he fairly glows" appears out of nowhere to rescue Katie. Agent Richard Morehouse, Certified Undead Investigator and Eradicator for the FBI, explains to Katie what has really been going on during the Contagion and informs her that she is a Beacon and as a Beacon her services are needed by the FBI. He also tells her that Beacons are irresistible to others and especially to him.
I will do anything I can, use any one of my multiple powers to protect you. But I will never, ever touch you. I can't. If I do, I wouldn't be able to control myself. I can barely control myself just sitting next to you.
Normally this line would be swoon worthy in a novel, but Agent Morehouse warns Katie that if they allow their attraction to take its natural course and Katie has a baby...she will die. Ooops...definite mood killer!
Frankly Zombie, Incorporated was not what I expected. What I expected was a dark tale about the Undead which was not the case. I laughed so much while reading this book. I love Katie...she is spunky and resourceful and she never takes herself too seriously despite having her life turned upside down. Her interactions with the other characters are really comical . The book is very well-written as I would expect from an author with Jill Elaine Hughes' experience so if you love to read and you love to laugh, you will not be disappointed. This is Book One of a series and ends rather abruptly with a snap of Agent Morehouse's fingers leaving the reader dangling and wondering what the author has in store for these very unconventional Undead! I am definitely anticipating reading more of Katie's and Agent Morehouse's story and finding out what direction the author will take in this series.
Darra's Review
I do have a soft spot for Zombie stories. And I did like this book. Katie is in High School and essentially an outcast with no friends and crappy parents. I mean really, her parents are awful despite she is not neglected. She does get this job that has odd people working there. I did laugh a little when describing the smell there(a little like a dead animal). Katie does need to be slapped by Captain Obvious. Call me paranoid but if a person smells like a zombie, looks a little like a zombie and eats brain rolls, I would peg them as a zombie.
Did I say I love Fred? It is funny that she does not understand what he means when giving her advice. She should read more fortune cookies to understand.
I like the book and will be reading the next book. The book was left to leave me a little aggravated I
have to wait for more!
For all my Zombie lovers, I give this book a 4.1.
Sunny's Review
I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book. I was a little nervous when it started out. Most of you know that I read to escape reality and really don't like reading depressing stories. This book definitely started out that way and honestly stayed that way...but luckily there was a zombie infestation to deal with so....couldn't really complain. Katie had an awful life. No friends and her parents couldn't wait for her to get out of the house after graduation. So Katie gets a job and suddenly nothing in her life really makes sense anymore. The hottest guy at school is interested in her at a party, the world goes crazy and she left to fend for herself during a zombie apocolypse. Her boss pays her a ton of money for basically doing nothing. Katie also meets an FBI agent that is (YAY!) blond hair blue eyed and a zombie (seriously? so close to having a good blond guy). He actually seems like a good guy but this book is a series so the author left me HANGING!!! I really hate/love cliffhangers...now I have to wait for the next book....
I think this book is a 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend you go get it. It is different and I think you will enjoy it.
