Sir Richard Kenworthy needs to find a wife, and he needs to do it in less than a month. Though he hopes to find someone he can have a decent life with, Richard knows he can’t be too picky. Then he spots Iris Smythe-Smith trying to hide behind her cello at her family’s musicale and he knows he’s found the perfect woman to suit his plans. Now if only he can get her to marry him quickly without asking too many questions…Iris Smythe-Smith is no fool. She knows Richard is hiding something, but for once she has met a man who not only sees her, he seems to actually like and understand her. Still, after a lifetime of being overlooked she doesn’t quite trust his motives. Then Richard forces them into a compromising position, and Iris has no choice but to marry him. Though she doesn’t understand his actions, Iris truly believes she has a chance at happiness with her new husband. Then Richard’s true reason for needing a wife comes to light, threatening to break their fragile bond forever…
Julia Quinn knows how to pen stories that are fun, charming, and impossible to put down. The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy isn’t quite Ms. Quinn’s usual fare, but thanks to the author’s talent, the pages of the story do fly by.
Iris Smythe-Smith is a gem. She’s a smart, quiet woman with a quick wit who generally blends into the background. You want to see her shine and get the attention such a compelling heroine should get. Simply put, Iris is easy to love. She’s no saint, but that only makes her an even better heroine and it’s impossible not to root for her to get the love she deserves. When Richard first courts her, even though you know it’s because he’s using her, the two of them are so delightful together it’s easy to be swept away by their banter.
However, some of the shine soon wears off of The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy, and that’s due to the hero. All the internal flagellation in the world doesn’t make up for the fact that he locks in on Iris from the start in order to use her. The ends may justify the means in his mind, but it won’t in anyone else’s. His secret – the reason for him marrying Iris – seems pretty obvious from the start, and if this plotline hadn’t dragged on for so long, I might have liked Richard a lot more. Ms. Quinn does a good job of showing that he isn’t a bad man, but that doesn’t make him a great hero. And Iris really deserved a great hero. I’m afraid I can’t say more about Richard without spoiling the story, so suffice it to say it would have been nice had there been a bit more to him that I could have latched on to so that his negative qualities (lying and manipulation) weren’t so stark.
It’s a testament to Ms. Quinn’s skill as a writer that even though I had issues with Richard I was entertained by The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy. Ms. Quinn makes even the most serious of her books feel light on their feet and I devoured this story in one day. Even though this is the final book in the Smythe-Smith quartet, I do hope that Ms. Quinn returns to the supporting characters one day, because after the all-too-brief appearances of the comical Winston Bevelstoke and the unicorn-obsessed Frances Pleinsworth, I am desperately hoping these two get books of their own.

Another winner from one of my favorite authors! Started out a little slow but I was soon involved with Iris and Sir Richard and couldn't wait to see what happened next. The dialogue in parts actually made me laugh out loud! Definitely a must read, time will fly by! ENJOY!! Sorry can't give you details Don't want to ruin anything ).
Another great historical from Julia Quinn. This is the story of a man with a secret ... a secret that really doesn't get revealed until the book is 2/3 done. In the meantime, we know that he needs to get married, and he needs to do it quickly. He arrives at the infamous Smythe-Smith musicale, and once Sir Richard lays eyes on Iris hiding behind her cello he knows that she is the one he will marry. Unfortunately, instead of just being open and honest with Iris, letting her know his predicament and allowing her to choose for herself whether she is interested in participating in his marriage of convenience, he orchestrates a circumstance where he and Iris are caught in a compromising position. The issue is forced, and Iris finds herself suddenly married to Richard. It could be a horrible situation, but it isn't. It turns out that Iris and Richard actually suit each other quite well. Iris is intelligent and witty, and she has a sense of humor that matches Richard's well. Everything seems to be going wonderfully. It looks as if these two are headed toward love ... but there is this secret that Richard is holding. Obviously, something big is going to be revealed that will change how Iris feels, maybe for good.
And this secret? Well ... it is a doozy. It is pretty horrible. I won't reveal it in this review in order to avoid spoiling the plot, but I will say this ... Richard was a blazing idiot when he came up with his plan to marry. A blazing idiot. It truly is an awful secret. In today's world it is almost disgusting to think that someone would come up with such a plan. Even considering the mores of the time period of the novel the plan is horrible. The plan itself is wildly inappropriate, but the fact that Richard pulled Iris into this scheme without her knowledge is more reprehensible. I am sure that many readers will have a hard time overlooking just how horrible this plan is. Richard does seem like an insensitive dolt, to say the least. Things become infinitely more horrible because Richard has actually fallen in love with Iris, and Iris loves him as well. It was heart wrenching to see these two in such agony, and it was frustrating to know that so much heartbreak could have been avoided if Richard had just thought things through a little and if he had just been open with Iris from the start. But, then again, desperation led Richard to choose Iris, a person he would have never looked at before. Stupidity actually worked to their good in a weird way.
This book contains the fun and wit that we are used to seeing in a Julia Quinn novel. I loved Iris. She was the right mixture of strength and vulnerability. I liked the strong hand that she exhibited in her relationship with Richard's strong willed sisters. I loved that she would giggle at the most inopportune times. I loved that she was strong enough to stand up for herself and strong enough to ultimately forgive. Outside of his boneheaded moves regarding his marriage and the big secret, I loved Richard too. He was a man trying to do the right thing in all the wrong ways. I loved his realization that he truly loved Iris, and I really, really loved his humble declaration of that love in the closing pages of the novel.
A reader's enjoyment of this story will probably boil down to how they react to Sir Richard's secret. Some will find his actions absolutely unforgivable, even when viewed in the context of the times, and that will surely make this story hard to stomach. I was able to see the ultimate tragedy of the story and love the transformation of Richard at the end of the story as he recognizes his great love for Iris. I ended up liking this story for that reason. Four stars.
I was really disappointed with this book, the first time I haven’t cared for a book by Julia Quinn. So much build up to this immense secret, and it was total dud. The characters were oddly lacking in development. I didn’t really care one way or another about anyone of them, except Sir Richard who annoyed me no end. Whiny, self-serving, selfish, bleh.
Families! Both Iris and Richard have them and they both have issues. I laughed really hard at Iris's cousins play and a few other places. Richard's sisters were a level of trouble he didn't know how to deal with, luckily Iris had lots of sisters and cousins and had a better idea on how to solve their problems! I very much enjoyed this story. Love the humor in this series.
Loved this book! I started off laughing out loud at the hilarious Smythe-Smith family scenes. Ms. Quinn then deftly drew me into the more profound emotions of her characters and I felt my heart breaking for them. Sir Richard is a good man who must resort to desperate measures to protect his family. The story explores the wrenching conflict he feels as he falls in love with Iris, a wonderfully smart, strong heroine, whom he has deceived in order to marry her. As Iris discovers the extent of Sir Richard's secrets, she battles with how much she is willing to do for the man she loves and his family. I flew through this book, enjoying every bit of witty dialogue and gut-tugging emotion. Highly recommend.
