This is a volume of 36 one page stories based on memories of the author's childhood in the 1930s and 40s. The stories are in the voice of the child and portray the experiences of a young, Jewish, first generation American girl growing up in old New York. Bea Gold combined her art background with her story-telling skills to create a beautiful coffee table book with an illustrative painting to accompany each story. Three sets of twelve story/painting combinations were shown in Los Angeles at art exhibits in 2008 and 2009 through the member organization The Silver Lake Art Collective. The complete set is presented here.

Tell Me a Story Stories from a Childhood in Old New York Bea Gold 0884997264252 Books Reviews
Bea Gold is a unique lady with special gifts. Not only is she an accomplished 'outsider/primitive' school artist (think Grandma Moses), able to create another time and atmosphere with very little detail, but she is also a fine writer who is able to tell stories form a child's point of view - even though these stories are written about Gold's own experiences growing up as a first generation American Jew in New York of the 1930s and 1940s. It is this combination of ingredients that makes this book - TELL ME A STORY - so engaging, a rich mixture of growing into a new culture with all the new accouterments of family tradition and the novelty of America.
Her stories are 36 in number, each story fills one page and opposite that page is an illustrative moment from the story. In many ways it is like a Child's Garden of Verses - the topics include foods and the preparation of same (chocolate pudding, lentil soup, bean and barley, potato latkes), her parents, the members of the neighborhood, the changes in schools, the Pogrom, visits to the dentist, and on and on. Each story bristles with he authenticity of New York life and the experience of being Jewish in those days.
Originally conceived as an art project (Bea Gold is very active in the Silver Lake Art Collective, an avid gardener, an experienced early childhood specialist), displayed with the art accompanied by the associated story in a gallery space, bringing these stories and artworks to the general public is a major step forward. Likely we will be seeing more about Bea Gold! Grady Harp, February 12
What I loved about this book is that (with a couple of exceptions, stories that might be too disturbing for children), is that it's a wonderful teaching tool to give children a sense of the historical past. Few can really relate to the stories alone, but the paintings evoke a sense of reality. You can see in your mind's eye how things would have looked, and really get a keener understanding of what life was like back then (I'm still reeling from the $9/mo. apt. that was a problem because they always wanted to repaint it...now we pay what(!!) for apts and landlord repainting is a ghost from the past). So many things that we take for granted now were not available then, and they found ways to work around obstacles. Bea's done a great job of re-creating her history; for both herself and her family and for posterity.
There are thirty-six stories in this book based on the memory of a young girl living in New York City in the 30's and 40's. Raised by immigrant parents, the author's writing and artwork are so beautiful that you can almost feel yourself in the city that never sleeps (some people think that is Las Vegas) but, we more mature people know its New York. I didn't read this book in one sitting although I could have, but read a few stories at a time to savor them.
Although I was brought up in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, reading this book I found that these stories apply to all kids growing up in the era before the war started and, knowing that these tales could create memories in all children of all races and religions and geographic locations.
Let me give you, the readers, a small idea of some of the truly tender moments in this book and also, some that were not so tender but, that's life. The first a story called "Naming" where the girl and her mother are talking about when her ancestors came to America and the authorities gave the immigrants new names that coincided with their real names. The next example is a story called "Getting Teddy." The girl's Aunt brought her a puppy because she was an only child and her Aunt thought the puppy would be good company for the girl. But, her mother objected as the house was so clean that the puppy would dirty it up. Mama let her keep the puppy but she kept a wooden hanger to beat the dog with if it had an accident. The author writes "She never beat the dog and the dog was always with the girl until she (the dog) died. She was NEVER hit and I was never lonely again."
As the year's passed and the Second World War started, the story is called "The War at Home" things had to be tightened up in the families as mom got a job and dad worked at the shipyards. There were blackouts, air raid sirens went off in the middle of the night, many things were rationed coffee, sugar, butter and cigarettes and many of the young men were drafted. The war lasted through the girl's high school years. The last story I want to tell you about is called "The Old Aunts." The family had two aunts and uncles that lived in Brighton Beach and the family would visit them frequently. When the aunts and uncles passed on mama checked through the closets in their homes to get rid of some of the old furniture and kitchen tools. In the closet they found a jar full of dark red liquid and cherries. This was homemade liqueur called "cherry wishniak." It took a long time to make and had to be kept in a dark place for two years. The girl and her mama had some of the liquid and it made the girl a little sick but, Mama got a little drunk. I wouldn't mind trying a bit of the cherry wishniak myself!!!
